Food Gardening
Food gardening is fun and it is healthy. Healthy for humans: fresh produce! But, it’s also healthy for the planet, since it saves on transportation, refrigeration and packaging. Local produce creates independency and resilience in times of shortage. It is estimated that a family needs two acres to sustain itself with food. Outcomes depend on diet, climate and the arability of the land. Healthy Yards’ Food Gardening message is not about full-time farming, it is about how we can add healthy produce to our diet in an environmentally friendly way. We love to consider our yards as food sources for animals AND humans. How can we maximize the benefits of what we have, whether it is a small city garden or a balcony, or an acre of woodland or prairie? And how can we share our produce with those whose circumstances limit their access to fresh produce.
